Description

“What I love about the wines is that Jennie Gardner and Colin McBryde can pour just as much passion into producing serious wines with serious labels and serious sense of terroir (Adelina) as they do producing a range of fun, everyday drinking wines with gloriously garish pulp fiction labels …” Max Allen, The Future Makers

The Adelina vineyards are situated in Spring Farm Valley, just south of the township of Clare in SA. Their neighbours include the vineyards of Wendouree, Aberfeldy and Sevenhill Cellars. The small Adelina plantings were originally established around 1910; mostly Shiraz and Grenache with small plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is right next door to Birk’s Wendouree so we know the terroir is good! The Gardner family has owned the Spring Farm Estate, which is the site of both the Adelina winery and vineyards, since 1986. Prior to the inception of Adelina Wines in 2000, the property was managed by Will and Elaine Gardner, and the fruit was sold to Tim Adams. In 2002, Col McBryde and Jen Gardner, Will and Elaine’s daughter, took over responsibility for the vineyards and launched Adelina wines which are made exclusively from the Estate vineyards. The pair has been involved in winemaking and research since the mid-90s.

About this wine:  Certified organic. Formally known as Field Blend. Originally planted in 1976 to Cabernet, grafted across in 2015 to a randomised block of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Ugni blanc, Roussanne and Carignan. A true representation of a field blend.

Hand-picked, fruit is destemmed and mildly crushed, fermentation and maceration for 12 days before being pressed to neutral French oak. Maturation time 10 months in 700l oak before bottling. 12.5% alc

95 points, Mike Bennie for Halliday Wine Companion “A field of varieties; shiraz, grenache, mataro, ugni blanc, carignan and roussanne were grafted into a single block randomly. The wine is picked at once and co-fermented. Matured in older, large format oak. It pours with the colour of pinot noir, has scents and flavours of raspberry, cranberry, cinnamon-clove spice and black olive with a touch of regional mintiness. It has slick texture with fine, silty grip of quality tannins, exceptional length and persistence, a sense of freshness and levity. Refreshment factor at its core. Beautiful, original wine.”

95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine FrontBlock 1, inter-planted Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Ugni blanc, Carignan and Roussanne. Shallow sandy site on a sandstone ridge. Picked as a homologous parcel, 12 days on skins in concrete, pressed to neutral 700l oak for 11 month.” What a mad fucker this bloke is. and guess what, it all worked out fine. Raspberry, cranberry, a whole lot of musk, and spiced strawberry, aniseed, and mint and cardamon pods and all the things. It’s light to medium-bodied, has a raspberry sweetness and musky crunch, white pepper tannin, peanut and a bit of a dirty thing happening, but it’s a nice dirty thing, and it’s gently bitter, and the finish is all orange peel and amaro twist. A beautiful mad house, is my reading. Unique.”
