WINNER – Best Value Winery, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.
When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day. The success did not happen by accident. He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines. He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA. Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.
In 2023 they took out “Best in Show” for his 2020 Rebus Cabernet at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards – “If there is a ‘winning region’ in this year’s Top 50 Best in Show selection, it has to be Western Australia’s Margaret River” 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards.
About this wine from Bruce Dukes “Floris is a modern and engaging expression of our local clone into wine. This style is a coevolution of Modern Australian food and wine culture, which has great emphasis on balance, freshness and hedonistic pleasure. Floris exhibits delicate textures and floral notes reminiscent of white jasmine flowers.”
About the 2024 vintage- “Lower than average soil moisture and higher than average temperatures through late spring and early summer allowed for smaller berries with better spacing on the bunch. This set the stage for a concentrated and intensely flavoured crop.
“Gin Gin clone Chardonnay matured and fermented in 1/3 new French oak barriques for 10 months. Restricted malo‐lactic fermentation, battonage fortnightly to add complexity and texture through “sur lie” whilst retaining purity of character and freshness. For immediate enjoyment or cellar up to 5 years. 13% alc.”
94 points, Ray Jordan “…a classy wine full of expression and style. On the nose, you get that white peach and nectarine combination with a little minerally, chalky influence. The palate is quite fine, but it’s intense with a driving flavour profile. Minerally, chalky, and savoury, with a light grapefruit primary fruit character. Finishes very long int its linear journey.”
93 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front “Pretty wine with so much grace, light touch, minerally drive. There’s lemon biscuit, peach blossom, some of the almond nuttiness, flint, lemon balm, lavender, a hint of green papaya and guava perhaps. It has a fine dusty detail in texture, with lemon and tart apple drive in the acidity spectrum. It’s a bright and, well, pretty floral wine.”
