Description
“Despite being located in one of the very best areas in Chianti Classico & boasting a superb track record, Rocca di Montegrossi remains one of the most under-the-radar estates in Chianti Classico, and Italy, for that matter. Proprietor Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi crafts deep, powerful wines that capture the essence of Monti, a sub-zone of Gaiole that has long been prized for the personality & pedigree of its reds. The estate’s Chianti Classico is often one of the best wines in its class, while the flagship San Marcellino & Geremia are reliably outstanding.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Located at Monti in Chianti (Gaiole), considered one of the region’s grand crus, Rocca di Montegrossi is named after the historic fortress (La Rocca) built by Marco’s ancestor, Geremia, during the Longobard period (600-800 AD). Marco is part of the Ricasoli family that wrote the story of Chianti Classico, creating the formula for the wine we know today at the site of what is now his San Marcellino vineyard. The soil here is incredibly rocky, forcing the roots deep and resulting in naturally low yields. Marco farms organically and has built his own large cisterns to gather rainwater, along with using biofuel for machinery.
Chianti Classico is made with 5% each of Canaiolo and Colorino, aged in tonneaux and barriques for twelve months. The fruity aroma is classic Sangiovese with notes of cherry and wild berry, the palate harmonious, well-structured and lightly tannic.
2022 release is here..
92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media “The 2022 Chianti Classico is fabulous—one of the best of the year. A burst of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and mint all race across the palate. Deep, layered and wonderfully sexy, the 2022 is utterly irresistible. It’s a superb effort from proprietor Marco Ricasoli Firidolfi.
93 points, Decanter “On the nose, it shows spectacular purity and vibrancy, a cornucopia of dark purple fruit with violet and lilac scents. This delicious treat for the palate is almost grapey in flavour with a lot of fruit sweetness. Black cherry and boysenberry meet soft, velvety tannins that you can bite into. The juicy acidity supports the fleshy flavour and a hint of pepper plays around it. A must buy!”
92 points, James Suckling “This juicy, well-balanced Chianti Classico delivers fresh, vibrant red berry and cherry fruit with touches of white pepper and hibiscus. Quite firm and juicy, with nicely chewy tannins and a dainty, succulent finish. Effortlessly drinkable, but will also hold well for the next few years.”
92 points, Wine Spectator “A rich, dense style, displaying cherry, raspberry and blackberry flavors, with a hint of black pepper, while assertive tannins and lively acidity lend support. This is balanced, if a tad extracted, with fine length. Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Drink now through 2032.”
