Description
James Kellie (formerly of Howard Park) has had extraordinary success in a relatively short time, winning trophies galore and for 10 consecutive years the elusive 5 red star rating (the highest recognition possible from James Halliday’s, Wine Companion awarded to Australia’s top 5% of wineries for “a consistent record of excellence”.).
The Great Southern wine growing region of WA is one of the largest, and most isolated wine regions in the world and provides unmatched versatility and quality for a winemaker. From the elegance and delicacy of cool climate Riesling to the restrained intensity of Denmark Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The texture and richness of Mount Barker Cabernet and the structure, weight and complexity of Frankland River Shiraz. Harewood Estate showcases this potential in a range of wines produced from grapes grown in select, low yielding vineyards.
This is James Kellie’s take on ‘Sancerre’.. This ain’t no ordinary SSB intensity of fruit .. 2016 season was cool perfectly suited to white varieties..The fruit for this wine was grown in the higher altitude, cool climate vineyards situated in the coastal region of Denmark, Western Australia – a blend of 54% Semillon and 46% Sauvignon Blanc.
Only the finest, more “pristine”, free-run juice was used resulting in a wine of outstanding elegance and purity, free from any harsh, phenolic characters associated with grape skins.
A third of each variety was fermented and left on lees in large 500 litre French oak puncheons for six weeks and then blended back with the cool fermented tank portion, introducing a subtle creamy texture and savoury complexity.
Minimal fining and the use of screw caps are all further steps towards capturing the inherent delicacy of this cool climate blend.
A brilliant, very pale straw colour with youthful green hues. An intense, pungent nose combining the aromatic quince and lemons of Semillon with the vibrant gooseberry and herbaceous snow pea of cool climate Sauvignon Blanc.
The intensity of the nose is reflected in the seamless purity of the palate. Mouth-watering citrus fruits are balanced by hints of more tropical passionfruit. An underlying flinty complexity is complemented by the subtle texture of french oak and a long, lingering finish of crisp grapefruit acidity. This mouthwatering wine is top shelf with acid backbone for many years ahead… delicious now
94 points, James Halliday Wine Companion “Lemon oil, lanolin, ripe apricot and durian aromas spring from the glass, before a bite and dusting of coconut sprinkles is conferred by high quality, new French oak. The palate boasts considerable breadth and some leesy detail following partial barrel fermentation, while strutting across a riff of high-wired, slatey acidity. Long and punchy. Drink 2017-2022”
