Description
It was 1983 when Ian and June Marks found their vineyard site after a long search for the perfect pocket of land throughout almost every wine region in Victoria. With views of Mt Donna Buang, a backdrop of the Warburton ranges, red soil and a coveted north-easterly aspect, it is the perfect spot for cool climate winemaking. Gembrook Hill led the way as part of the ‘second wave’ of Yarra Valley vignerons, and today is one of the oldest vineyards in the Upper Yarra sub-region.
Gembrook’s wines are regarded as some of the most outstanding examples of their variety in Australia and are crafted with an old-world winemaking mindset. Most vine age now over twenty years. Gembrook Hill was one of the pacesetters in the Yarra Valley with its restrained yet complex style of chardonnay. The sauvignon blanc possesses characteristics found in Sancerre.. this is up there with the finest examples in the land.. gorgeous wine it’s textural, pure and thirst quenching. And the pinot noir has the elegance of old world Burgundy. The most recent addition to the range, the vintage Blanc de Blancs, has been acclaimed as one of the finest of its type, French or otherwise.
About this wine from the winemaker: “The 2025 Sauvignon Blanc comes from our estate grown old vine fruit. Crushed and pressed, fermented in large format old french oak with wild yeast. Elevage of this wine is on lees until bottling. Estate bottled in January 2026. A warmer season has produced a complex, beautifully balanced wine with great texture and intensity.”
“The 2025 Sauvignon Blanc opens with ripe, beautifully balanced aromatics, showing lifted citrus, and gentle mineral notes. The palate is intense yet finely detailed, driven by grapefruit skin, bright citrus, and white‑stonefruit. A subtle thread of oak brings shape and texture without ever interfering with the wine. The overall impression is one of harmony, ripeness, and precision, with purity and varietal clarity firmly at the centre.”
95 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Gold star sauvignon blanc. One sip and I was both hooked and convinced. You don’t need to be a Sauvignon Blanc drinker to want to seek this wine out. It’s fine, structured, elegant and well powered, with complex length and all-round class. Stones, grapefruit rind, passionfruit, lemongrass and nectarine flavours mingler with woodsmoke and tonic water. It’s delicious. It’s impressive. And it’s super long.”
