Description
Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.
About this wine from the winemakers “This wine is named after iconic Wineglass Bay situated on the spectacular Freycinet Peninsula nearby. It is produced from meticulously tended 34 year old vines, all hand pruned and hand harvested. Viticulturally the aim is to grow a moderate yield of fully ripe healthy fruit. Our cool climate enables a long, slow ripening season producing remarkable intensity of aroma and flavour plus excellent natural acidity balance in the fruit.
“The aim in the winery is to harness this fruit purity in such a way that it leaps out of the glass and provides considerable drinking pleasure. This is achieved through gentle handling along with slow fermentation at cool temperatures. To provide an extra dimension of creamy texture and complexity, 60% of this wine was fermented and matured in predominately seasoned French barriques, with a small percentage of new oak giving the wine subtle structure and length. Texture and complexity is enhanced without obvious oak characters. Being older barrels, the texture and complexity is enhanced without obvious oak characters.”
“The 2023 vintage brought lower than average yields and cooler conditions throughout the growing season. Fruit quality was excellent with small bunches and berries providing superb concentration of flavours and good acid balance. The wine is lively and exuberant featuring vibrant gooseberry, citrus and passionfruit aromas. The generous palate is awash with an array of tropical fruits, ruby
grapefruit and soft herbs and offers a creamy smooth mid palate with subtle layers of complexity and impressive length.”
TROPHY WINNER – ANZ BOUTIQUE WINE SHOW
93 points, Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front “How relevant is gooseberry as a descriptor for SB in Australia? Anyway, it’s exactly that… Gooseberry, green melon, cucumber. Painted in green freshness with peach blossom and raw cashews lingering in the background. Vibrating juice with a strong ‘mineral’ feel lifting the palate. There’s yellow grapefruit pith, pomelo and raw ginger in the flow too. It’s unmistakably SB but with lots of grace and purity of fruit, intensity and great energy.”
92 points, Dave Brookes for James Halliday “A delicious East Coast sauvignon blanc from the low yielding 2023 vintage. Pale in the glass with aromas of grapefruit, gooseberry and citrus fruits cut with hints of white flowers, stone, melon, flint, green beans, passion fruit puree and mountain herbs. Mouth-filling and concentrated with a minerally framework and bright acid pulse, finishing dry and lipsmacking.”
