Description
Flametree Wines has had a meteoric rise to become one of the star wineries of the Margaret River wine region. Under the skilled winemaking of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate) the quality of wines are impressive across the board.
James Halliday … “Flametree, owned by the Towner family (John, Liz, Rob and Annie), has had extraordinary success since its first vintage in 2007. The usual practice of planting a vineyard and then finding someone to make the wine was turned on its head: a state-of-the-art winery was built, and grape purchase agreements signed with growers in the region. Show success was topped by the winning of the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its 2007 Cabernet Merlot. If all this were not enough, Flametree secured the services of winemaker Cliff Royle.
From the winemaker about the 2021… “The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon we blended fruit from three Sauvignon Blanc vineyards in Wallcliffe and one Semillon vineyard in Treeton. All these vineyards are on hill side slopes and benefit from aspect and drainage. Many of the vineyards were leaf plucked hard on the morning sun side to allow light and air to penetrate and dry up moisture from the rain. Sites with red stony loom soils seemed drain far better then sites with clay or mungite. Sauvignon Blanc dominates the blend at 84% and then Semillon is 16%. We still believe you get the best aromatic whites from the southern part of Margaret River and 2021 is no exception.
Individual night harvests were crushed, chilled and pressed into tank for a 3-4 day settling period. One batch was whole berry fermented on skins and pressed during fermentation, this gives us a nice complex blending component. Batches were then racked and warmed before either going into barrel (stainless or oak) to undergo wild ferment or inoculated using selected yeast strains. 24% of the juice was wild fermented with grape solids in new and older large format oak. The lees were stirred weekly for 12 weeks and then left on lees for a further 4-5 months before racking onto light lees and receiving first sulphur additions. The lees work has resulted in some lovely textural elements that perfectly complement the racy citrus fruit flavours.
The nose shows citrus, fragrant lemongrass, kiwi fruit, lychee and elderflower. The lychee notes and white nectarine provide a burst of flavour on the palate whilst the grape solids and barrel ferment add complex savoury notes and minerality. A nice balance of fresh lifted fruit flavours, fine acidity and texture are the key attributes of the 2021 vintage. This wine will drink well over the warmer months with or without food and provide some short term reward for cellaring up to 2-3 years.”
A cracking Margaret River white here .. gorgeous depth of fruit, complexity and balance. Absolutely delicious!
Review for 2020 .. 93 points, Erin Larkin, Halliday’s 2022 Australian Wine Companion “.. All southern fruit (Karridale and Walcliffe). A combination of fermentation vessels including oak (9% new), the oaked batches wild-yeast fermented. Stirred on lees 4 months. A green jalepeño character from semillon is evident on the nose and palate. Textural and lively, the oak already countersunk nicely. No hard edges, all class.”
