Description
Crawford River wines from Henty in South Western Victoria are crafted exclusively from hand-picked and selected fruit grown at their estate vineyard, whereupon they are vinified and bottled on site. The fruit is brought to the winery in small parcels, where meticulous attention is paid to detail. Patience and time are of the essence in their winery.
From the winery: “This special section of the Crawford River vineyard was planted in 1995. We have always thought the vineyard was unique and capable of great things, but our excitemnet was elevated when digging the posts in 1994, as we were bringing up fossilised sea shells with chalky limestone below rich ironstone topsoil.
Both varieties are 100% Whole bunch pressed, settled in tank overnight, chilled and racked the next day to barrel. No additions are made to this juice which is left to naturally ferment in its own time. It spends around 10 months in majority older oak, after which it is blended to tank where it spends another 7 months settling – and perhaps undergoing some malolactic fermentation if it feels like it.
Savoury, spiced and laden with flavour. A spectrum of stone fruit, cashew nut and macadamia shortbread are present on the nose, encased with an edge of fresh bay and mace. Watermelon rind, white nectarine & floral citrus notes follow on the palate, which is supple, full and bone dry. Chalky acidity, which is a given from this block in our vineyard, is there, drawing a continuous line from front to back.”
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Sauvignon blanc and semillon made pretty in oak barrels and spending time on lees. Gorgeous stuff. Quirky scents that I found very appealing, sage leaf, chicken stock, lemon-lime, peach, nashi pear, cashew nuts. There’s an exotic lilt to this wine, lots of texture, lots of character, good length, depth and freshness too. Something a bit seaweedy, umami-like, very good in the mix of things. Slightly saline too. It doesn’t feel like a rank and file fume, it elevates things and marches to its own beat. Really like it.”
