The Mitchell Wines journey began more than 70 years ago when a young mixed farmer, Peter McNicol Mitchell, used his hands to breathe life into a small patch of vineyard in the western hills of the Clare Valley. With Andrew and Jane Mitchell seeing the light and establishing Mitchell Wines in 1975, it has now grown to encompass 40 hectares under vine, a winery, and a bottling hall. Mitchell Wines is now led by third generation siblings, Angus, Edwina, and Hilary.
“Riesling can lay claim to being the world’s most noble grape. It offers great intensity of flavour and tells the story of its origins without the need for intervention. Our Watervale Riesling has been hand crafted in the traditional way as when we first released it back in 1977.” Mitchell Wines
Mitchell Watervale Riesling is crafted in the same traditional, low intervention style that has been used consistently for the past 45 years. the crop is hand picked and treated carefully in the winery, where only the highest quality free-run juice is used. The wine undergoes a slow, gentle fermentation with indigenous vineyard yeast. An extended period on fine lees, resulting in a textural and balanced wine, characterised by its refreshing acid, finesse and approachable elegance.
About the 2024 vintage:A wet a cold winter was followed by an extremely mild summer; sunny days were few and far between. This resulted in a very slow ripening period, but with this was exceptional flavour development and acid retention. Our Riesling vineyards had great soil moisture heading into the growing season with big full canopies, the vines were never stressed, and the fruit picked was outstanding.
2024 Watervale Riesling is bright and clear with pale straw hues. Aromas of stone fruit and white flowers. A classic Watervale palate of lemon and lime with crunchy acid throughout and bath salts on the finish. The flavours refresh and linger on the palate with perfect balance of fruit and acid.
50th Anniversary Release!
95 points and Top 100 Wines of 2025, Mike Bennie for Halliday Wine Companion “A riesling that typically packs in a bit more flavour, character and textural detail, and no slouching in those departments with this release. Chalky pucker underscores a core of fleshy red apple and lime fruit characters with faint toasty spice, some nutty savouriness and a thread of briny minerality, all coming with immense presence and persistence. The wine is character-filled and complex, plus, importantly, so very delicious to drink. It’s a class act, and incredibly well priced for the quality.”
96 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com “The vibrant jasmine and white peach aromas of this youthful dry riesling leap out of the glass at you. Great concentration and purity on the totally focused, medium-bodied palate. More than enough juicy peach fruit to balance the glistening samurai-sword acidity that powers the very long, wet-stone and lime finish. Already delicious, but also has great aging potential. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Mitchell don’t make ‘wincey face’ Riesling. They do something different. This offers flavour and texture. It’s soft, but has balanced acidity, with ripe apple and pink grapefruit, lemon sorbet, and a bit of perfume about it, and that fine chalky texture and grip on the long finish is so nice, with a gentle quinine bite and some savoury bits.”
