Description
Koehler-Ruprecht is one of the oldest, most distinctive wineries in the Pfalz region. These wines are made using only the finest hand-selected grapes, which undergo spontaneous fermentation in very old wooden barrels. These amazingly long-living Rieslings buck the trend when it comes to what we have more recently come to understand as dry German Riesling.
People in the know, know there’s nothing like it. “Kallstadt is home to one of the greatest dry white wines in the world. Yes, I’m talking about the dry Saumagen Riesling from Koehler-Ruprecht,” writes Stuart Pigott, author of Best White Wine on Earth.
The Saumagen vineyard is one of the most celebrated sites of the Pfalz region. It has calcareous soils on a south-facing slope and delivers wines with especially high minerality and ageing potential. The grapes are harvested with up to five selective pickings by hand. They’re crushed and then macerated between 12 to 24 hours before undergoing spontaneous fermentation. The wines are aged in traditional oval-shaped oak or chestnut barrels ranging from 300 to 2400 litres, with up to nine months on the lees. They are lightly filtered and bottled just before next harvest.
96 points. Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com Nov 2023 “An extremely concentrated and focused dry riesling that’s still a bit closed, but already shows wonderful rosehip, wild rose and fennel aromas with the stone fruit character slowly emerging as it aerates in the glass. Wonderful textural complexity, the finish extremely long and complete. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”
