Trophy – 2026 Tasmanian Wine Show, Best Riesling – Cool Wine Trophy
Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.
Winery notes about this release: “Tasmania is an extraordinary place for Riesling with its potential to produce some of the nation’s finest. Freycinet Rieslings have a fine pedigree stretching back 23 years to 1998 when the first 100% varietal riesling was produced, gaining high praise and considerable recognition along the way. We are particularly passionate and excited about riesling at Freycinet. Our philosophy is to showcase the purity of riesling aroma and flavour in the wine. This begins with growing moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit in the vineyard. Vines are all hand pruned and hand harvested. In the winery a very careful, protective approach is utilised to ensure the delicate yet intense aromas and flavours are not lost. Key to this is a very slow fermentation at cool temperatures.”
About 2025 vintage … “The vines begans pring with a strong start after a typical winter of average temperatures and rainfall. Spring rainfall reached only 70% of the norm, though slightly warmer conditions prevailed. The warmth carried into summer, supported by well-timed rain. By the harvest months of March and April, rainfall had dropped to 60% of average and the season turned noticeably drier. The consistently warm weather promoted even ripening, while excellent flowering earlier in the season led to higher-than-usual yields. Overall, the season produced well-balanced fruit of outstanding quality.
“Half the pleasure of Riesling is its delicate floral aroma, like fresh blossoms in spring, which the 2025 Freycinet Riesling shows beautifully. The palate is vibrant and elegant, bursting with juicy lime, crisp green apple, zesty grapefruit and ripe white nectarine, finished with a touch of spice and a refreshing mineral snap. Perfect with seafood, especially oysters. 13% alc.

94 points, Dave Brookes, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion “Pale straw in the glass with aromas of grapefruit, green apple and citrus along with hints of clover blossom, pressed wildflowers, apple sorbet, crushed riverstone, sea breeze and distant notes of soft spice and ozone. Lime rolls in on the palate with a sheen of grapefruit pith texture, all wrapped up with a stony acid line and some lovely focus on the exit.”
