Description

Award winning family owned and operated boutique winery Frankland Estate is located in Frankland River, the coolest and most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia.  Warm days, cool nights (maritime influenced by the proximity to the Great Southern Ocean – means milder summers and winters) optimum ripening conditions, sustainable organic practices and a pristine pollution free environment are all contributing factors to the fine wines it produces.

This wine was made from 100% riesling grown in family’s estate vineyards. A selection of small ferments was made from parcels of fruit harvested in some younger vines planted in 2006 on a high ironstone rocky ridge in the ironstone “coffee rock” that is classic soil from the property at Frankland Estate. This combines with some of Frankland Estate’s original parcels of riesling planted in 1988.

The cool nights and long slow ripening periods typical of the Frankland region allow maximum flavour development while maintaining the distinctive vibrant acidity for which Rieslings from this region are renowned.

About the 2023 from the winemaker:  “A fantastic vintage for Frankland River Riesling. A very wet and cold winter, was followed by a cool and wet spring which wet the soil profile all the way through, providing ideal conditions for good growth and fruit set on the vines. A judicious approach to viticulture ensuring yields were managed through fruit selection paid dividends as the season became very mild to cool towards the end of the growing season. Riesling was harvested in mid to late March with optimal ripeness and exceptional fruit quality.”

“Grapes are pressed immediately on arrival at the winery with the juice left to settle in tank over night before being racked. The wine was then fermented in stainless steel tanks at relatively low temperatures (12-15C) over 4 weeks with minimal intervention from our winemakers to obtain the purest expression of the pristine, organically grown fruit. The wine was then left on its fermentation lees for at least 8 months prior to bottling.

“Very fragrant white and yellow florals. A nice mix of vibrant limes, honey suckle, bath salts, tangerine and jasmine combine to give an alluring complex nose. So fresh and lively. A soft and delicate wine with persistence and presence. Mandarin and white stone fruit abounds with an edge of talc, citrus pith and a saline mineral finish. Exceptional balance interwoven with a creamy texture. Consistent with the now well-established Riesling style from Frankland Estate this wine displays the balance of pristine fruit flavour, precise delicate acidity, medalled with generosity of fruit, resulting in an exceptional wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared with the confidence it will continue to develop further complexity over the next 10 years.”

Newly released 2023 … Reviews of 2022: 94 points, Stuart Pigott for JamesSuckling.com “The wide spectrum of citrus, floral and herbal aromas really makes this stand out in the category. Ripe, juicy and elegant on the medium- to full-bodied palate where there’s excellent concentration. Long, generous and impeccably balanced finish.

93 points, James Halliday, Australian Wine Commpanion It is already showing an array of aromas and linked flavours, with ripe citrus (Meyer lemon) to the fore. It’s very seductive – can there be too much of a good thing?”
