Description
Clos Clare is a boutique winery located in the famous Florita Vineyard of Watervale in the Clare Valley, owned and run by 3rd generation wine growers/makers Sam and Tom Barry. The Barry family bought this property in 1986 from Leo Buring in which the fruit from this vineyard went into making the benchmark Leonay wine. When the Warilto Homestead was sub divided including a small 45 year old 5 acre parcel of the vineyard to Ian Saunders, Clos Clare was born and is now proudly the wines of the Barry brothers.
Riesling is the Clare Valley ‘s signature variety and this vineyard from clos Clare’s Riesling patch adjoins the historic ‘Florita ‘ vineyard in Watervale.
From the winemaker about this wine: “Aromas of white flowers, citrus, wet stone, and grapefruit flesh. The palate is lively, with lime, mandarine and grapefruit flavours, a zippy acid drive with bath salts and stone fruits on the finish.”
94 points, Mike Bennie for Halliday Wine Companion “The Clos Clare patch is comprised of 53-year-old riesling vines, for this wine. It’s such a pristine, bony and tense expression, refreshing and moreish as it comes. Scents of lime and green apple, chamomile, ozone and flinty mineral qualities, the palate a reflection of these descriptions through and through. A chalky pucker to texture, light on – let’s say delicate – but packed with fruit and mineral qualities. Beautiful poise and precision. Lots of words to say ‘this is a ripper drink’, and wonderful in the prime of its youth.”
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Am I right in thinking 2023 was a good vintage for Clare Valley Riesling? On the back of 2021 and 2022.
A whole lot of flint and crunch and energy here. It’s bony but has flavour, there’s lime zest, lemongrass and spice, bath salts, a grapefruit and lemon sherbet zing, and a smattering of green herbs. Acidity is pure and firm, and the finish is very long and tight, with white pepper to close. No shortage of texture. Excellent.”
