Description

“I can’t think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound … an unprecedented level of consistency and quality across their entire range.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo. The overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations.

Back in the 60’s when local Lange white grape Arneis was almost extinct Alfredo made a small parcel which was lauded by an influential journalist as the birth of new white wine of Langhe. The rest is history and now 8 million bottles of Arneis (nicknamed the White Nebbiolo!) are produced in Piedmont every year!

About this wine from the winemaker: The grapes are from select vineyards, characterised by limestone-and clay-rich soil, in the municipality of Santo Stefano Roero in Roero. The average age of the Guyot-cultivated vines is around 30 years and the average density per hectare is 4500-5000 plants.

“The grapes are harvested by hand in and around early September (in 2022, the harvest was particularly early). After destemming and gentle pressing, fermentation, which is very slow to maintain the fresh and intense fruity flavour, takes place in steel containers at a temperature of 14-16°C. Halfway through the fermentation, the tank is hermetically sealed in order to reabsorb a small amount of natural CO2. This wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine remains on the lees in the steel tank until it is time to bottle it.

“Straw-yellow colour with fresh floral, citrus and melon aromas, and notes of minerals and almonds. A dry, medium-bodied wine with fresh acidity. Well-balanced, elegant and with good complexity and persistence. Excellent as an aperitif, it can be enjoyed with light appetisers, vegetables and raw fish, salads, light soups, simply cooked veal, pork and chicken, and creamy cheeses.”

13.5% alc.

Brand new release, the 2023 has great freshness and lifted fruit balanced by great line of acid.

Review for 2022 90 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “The 2022 Roero Arneis is fresh herbs and floral with tarragon, white flowers, and white peach. Medium-bodied and revealing fresh orchard fruit, saline, and notes of basil, it has texture but surprising freshness and is really lovely at this youthful stage. Drink it over the next several years.”
