Description
Since 1887 many generations of the Tessari family have been growers in Soave. In 1982 Giovanni Tessari and his wife Rosetta, aware of their land ‘s great potential for producing high quality wines, decided to stop selling off their grapes and to produce their own wine! They named their winery Suavia after the ancient town of Soave their 12 hectare vineyard is located in – some in Fittà (at 296 metres above sea level) and some in Castellaro. Mature vineyards at 30 plus years of age, altitude, volcanic soils and much work in the vineyard has produced great results. The winery is now run by the 3 daughters: Valentina, Meri & Allessandra.
This fine Soave is a joy, made of 100% Garganega from their Monte Carbonare vineyard (named after the volcanic soils translates as ‘hill of coal’ and the highest vineyard in the Classico zone).
The vineyard covers an area of 6 hectares facing north-east and north-west within the u.g.a. Carbonare at an altitude of 280 meters.
The area is characterized by deep volcanic soils with a clayey texture which have a particularly dark color (black basalts) reminiscent of coal, and the toponym “Carbonare” seems to derive from this characteristic. Here the Garganega vines, planted with the traditional “pergola veronese” training system, reach an average age of about 60 years.
From the winemaker: Bright straw yellow in colour. Smoky and sulphurous on the nose it has hints of flint together with notes of citrus and wildflowers. On the palate it is creamy and elegant. It has great freshness and flavor. The finish is dry and very persistent.
Winner of Tre Bicchieri (3 glasses), the highest accolade, in newly released 2024 Gambero Rosso Vini d’Italia – the Italian “wine bible”!
95 points, James Suckling “Red volcanic iron soil with abundant black basalt in the centre. Matches the later ripening Garganega, while the screw cap promotes the freshness sought at this address. 6 ha. 60-70 year old vines in cooler sites, rising to the crème de la crème of the top sites as the climate warms. A richer wine than the younger Classico, but without the same cheeky vitality. While the Classico is an unbeatable everyday wine, this is a complex wine that calls for food and a little more contemplation. Mirabelle plum, apricot pit, a hint of dried mango and plenty of smoky, sharp mineral grip, with dutiful freshness that has a chewy length. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”
93 points, Decanter “Charming aromatic profile with a strong fruit core lined with layers of herbs and nuts. Burgundian, nutty nuances, honey-glazed almonds, lemon curd and a hint of smoke add charm. Lively, acidic finish. Beautiful intensity and a great life ahead.”
