Description
Kumeu River, northwest of Auckland is revered as NZ’s finest chardonnay producer. Master of Wine and winemaker Michael Brajkovich has been crafting fine chardonnay at the estate since the 1980’s and his wines rival the very best in the world and has weaved his magic with this Pinot Gris release.
Kumeu’s Pinot Gris gets the same fastidious care and attention in the vineyard as their Chardonnay . They are inspired by the wines of Alsace with this variety. Handpicked fruit and vigorous selection from the low yielding vines, some skin contact for some tannin to match the richness of the fruit, whole bunch pressed, wild yeasts fermentation in tank.
From the winemaker about this wine: “The Pinot Gris vineyards we have in Kumeu are producing grapes of high quality consistently that allow us to make wine that is rich, complex and delicious. The wild yeast fermentation took place in tanks over an extended period. The aromas have typical peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral perfume that we have come to expect from Pinot Gris. On the palate the wine is rich and complex with a lively texture on the palate. Pinot Gris is a variety that goes particularly well with food, including quite intensely flavoured dishes. It is also one of the few wine styles that can handle the spiciness of chilli, so together with the sweet succulence of prawns, a nicely chilled bottle of Kumeu River Pinot Gris makes up a spectacular combination.”
Pinot Gris is a variety that goes particularly well with food, including quite intensely flavoured dishes including chicken and charcuterie. It is also one of the few wine styles that matches the spiciness of chilli and Asian spice, so together with the sweet succulence of prawns it is a spectacular combination – it was a huge hit when we drank with Vietnamese and Thai spice!

“This has an elegantly proportioned nose with softly presented but fresh fruit aromas of white and yellow stonefruits along with piquant yellow florals entwined with nutty and honied elements, and hints of minerals. The aromatics build in intensity with aeration. Dryish to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is harmoniously presented with gently layered ripe, white and yellow stonefruits entwined with yellow florals and honied nuances.” Raymond Chan, raymondchanwinereviews.co.nz.
