The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of Australian wine, graduating with the 17th diploma in winemaking in Australia. He went on to become the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business, which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the custodian of Jim Barry Wines is their second son Peter, who joined the family winery in 1977 and now works along side his own sons, Tom and Sam.
“I first tasted Assyrtiko in August 2006 while on holiday with my wife Sue on the Greek island of Santorini, birthplace of the Assyrtiko grape variety. The crisp, acidic qualities reminded me of our Clare Valley Rieslings and yet it was a flavour I had not experienced before. Intrigued with this newfound variety, I began the process of importing cuttings into Australia through quarantine. In August 2012 we planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety. Our Assyrtiko journey has been fascinating and has enabled us to produce a wine which, I believe, is a true expression of the variety. I hope you find the flavours as interesting as I did in 2006.” Peter Barry, Second Generation Family Winemaker.
From the winemaker about the 2025: “Bursting with white peach, old-fashioned lemonade and juicy citrus, this wine shows vibrant and refreshing fruit intensity. Layers of peach, just-ripe stone fruits and hints of fresh strawberry make for an explosion of flavour. Plush and rounded with a beautiful, mouthwatering salty finish- this is one of our best vintages yet.”
94 points, Mike Bennie, Halliday Australian Wine Companion “A shag on a rock for a variety and producer in Australia, but jeez, the incremental excellence year-on-year suggests no resting on laurels. It’s a brilliant, textural white wine here, flamboyant with jasmine florals, lime, sea spray, faint cashew nut savouriness, pink grapefruit, a thread of aniseed and dashes of salt bush. Gently chalky texture, good extension of flavour, refreshing, too. Very good.”
92 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review” Greece is the word if you’re thinking assyrtiko. It’s a speciality of the island of Santorini but is also grown elsewhere in Greece. The Barrys were first with this grape in Australia. Light, bright yellow; dry straw and dried herbs on the nose, the palate light and fruity with a faint trace of sweetness with the stone-fruits and lemons of the palate flavour, all lifted and energised by zesty acidity. Delicious lemon-sherbet taste that lingers throughout the clean, dry finish. Very stylish wine. “
