Description
The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of Australian wine, graduating with the 17th diploma in winemaking in Australia. He went on to become the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business, which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the custodian of Jim Barry Wines is their second son Peter, who joined the family winery in 1977 and now works along side his own sons, Tom and Sam.
“I first tasted Assyrtiko in August 2006 while on holiday with my wife Sue on the Greek island of Santorini, birthplace of the Assyrtiko grape variety. The crisp, acidic qualities reminded me of our Clare Valley Rieslings and yet it was a flavour I had not experienced before. Intrigued with this newfound variety, I began the process of importing cuttings into Australia through quarantine. In August 2012 we planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety. Our Assyrtiko journey has been fascinating and has enabled us to produce a wine which, I believe, is a true expression of the variety. I hope you find the flavours as interesting as I did in 2006.” Peter Barry, Second Generation Family Winemaker.
White floral aromas combined with orange rind, lemon zest, sweet freshly cut grass and lifted bath salts. A classic profile with the nose carrying through to the palate. The 2022 Assyrtiko has a talc-like texture, with a subtle saline finish. 12% ALC.
2023 is here!
93 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Well, this is the seventh vintage of this wine we’ve reviewed, and I think it’s getting better and better …this is just the ticket for a 35c September day in Sydney. Lots of crunch, plenty of bite. It’s frisky, lemon zest, green apple and aromatic herbs, a little fennel. Texture is excellent, along with fresh thirst-slaking quinine-laced dryness, and a juicy/dry finish of excellent length. Very good. Energetic. Delicious.”
