Description
Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!
Made in a pure-fruited, medium bodied style that takes its inspiration from Burgundy rather than northern Italy or Alsace, this finely weighted Gris is drawn from a south-facing site in Merricks. The fruit was hand sorted in the vineyard and winery, then whole bunch pressed into to old barriques to ferment using indigenous yeasts. The wine only goes through partial malolactic, to preserve freshness and was matured on its lees in old neutral barrel for six months.
No fan of the nondescript, structure-free Gris style that abounds, Barney’s versions are well-defined and refreshing examples. Apple-tangy and creamy in the mouth, its fleshy, charismatic flavours fall between the spiced apple/pear and stone fruit spectrum and the wine finishes with rippling citrus-laden dryness and notes of nutmeg and honey. Serious quality here
Review of 2018
” Full straw with gold hues. Rich, spicy custard apple, almost tarte-tartin, plus a yeasty-leesy note. Quite spicy on the palate too, some light, white oak flavours from 6 months in barrel, plus a piercing citrus acidity and crunchy phenolics. Complex, idiosyncratic and challenging. Extra points for that.95 pts” James Halliday
