Description
Castro Martin certainly is a benchmark Albarino producer that exemplifies the cool, damp coastal granite of Val do Salnes, the birthplace and sub-region home to the purest of Albariños in Rias Baixas just north of Portugal on the Atlantic coast.
What a mouthwatering medley of field herbs, melon, lime with minerality and refreshingly powerful acidity. This is the northernmost region where it can ripen so this is racy and minerally, the ‘Yin’ of albarino. It is all structure and elegance with a more-ish saline lick ‘gracias’ to its proximity to the Atlantic.
After this being imported 15 years into Australia, the importer requested Bodegas Castro Martin select their finest tank of 2017 harvest to be unfiltered to preserve all the textural enjoyment. The best tank of Albariño has been bottled ‘raw’, cold-stabilised and released without filtration. At this stage, this wine is an exclusive Australian release.
Beautiful savoury pear, with yellowed straw and apple cider on the nose, and CM’s trademark smooth-fruited journey in the mouth. Almost certainly the most savoury CM yet, it is a little richer than usual, but the full-fruitedness is textural rather than fruity as such, with apple-skin fruit tannins tucking everything in and the lees ageing for savoury mouthfeel. Pear-apple ‘two fruits’ plus nectar florals and super texture. Don’t miss this fabulous Albarino.. Viva Espana!
“This tangy white has a briny, chalky character, with bracing acidity giving a racy edge to the fleshy texture. Assertive, fresh and lively. Drink now through 2020.” Wine Spectator review of 2016
