Description
Cascina delle Monache is one of the most exciting producers in Gavi, in Italy’s Piemonte region. Project of young vigneron Tiziano, the indigenous grape Cortese has been grown at the Arecco family farm since 1978 – 4 hectares of vines form which they craft two stunning Gavi del Commune di Gavi including an old vine bottling.
The farm, nestled in the heart of the appellation in the little town of Nebbioli, sits on soils which share the same geological origin with the Langhe: Cessola (Langhian) marls and Serravallian sands, called ’terre blanche’ (white soils) locally: a mix of shallow limestone and sand. Sustainable viticulture and meticulous are at the heart of the project, projecting Cascina delle Monache into the exciting panorama of contemporary Italian white wine.
About this wine: 100% Cortese from a single vineyard with full eastern exposure. The name takes inspiration from an ancient almond tree that sits atop the vineyard. Ronco is a topographic term describing land reclaimed from bush and wild nature.
This is the oldest parcel owned by the Arecco family, planted in 1978. The soils are Cessola marls of Langhian origin with sandy stratifications. The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates, promptly destemmed, and gently pressed using a basket press. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel (70%) and seasoned oak barrels (30%).
What an explosion of flavour of stone fruit, lemon rind, thyme and minerality! Layers of intensity of fruit with more-ish middle palate texture and weight balanced by beautifully long refined acidity. Pedigree in spades here so do not miss out on this.
This top shelf Cortese reminds me of 1re Cru Chablis from cool vintage with longer line of mouthwatering flavour and freshness. Buonissimo !
