Ashbrook Estate is one of the oldest established wineries in the Margaret River region located in the heart of Wilyabrup. Truly family owned and operated since 1975, all wines are handpicked and crafted from only Estate grown fruit. All processing, winemaking, bottling and packaging are done on site using the Estate’s own private facilities. 2019 saw Ashbrook Estate complete its 41st Vintage, one of only 5 Margaret River wineries to do so! James Halliday says: “This estate is one of the quietest and highest achievers in Australia, maintaining excellent viticulture and fastidious winemaking.”
Notes from the winemaker: “Vintage 42 at Ashbrook saw one of our earliest starts to harvest with the first Chardonnay grapes coming into the winery on February 4th. Less than ideal spring weather impacted flowering and fruit-set in several white varieties resulting in lower than normal yields. Warmer than average spring temperatures evolved into perfect summer growing conditions which accelerated grape development. Timely flowering of native Marri trees kept bird pressure at bay. The combination of lower yields, a warm, dry ripening and no disease pressure resulted in fruit of exceptional quality with concentrated aromas and flavours.“
“After collecting cuttings during pruning season from one of the oldest Vineyards in the Swan Valley north east of Perth in 1976 the “Old Block” was planted on Ashbrook Estate. Due to its popularity a second block was planted in 1987 which is affectionately known as the “Verdelho over the creek”. Originally all VSP grown, the majority was converted to cane pruned Lyre trellis in 2010 with immediate and brilliant results. Coupled with the application of composted mulch, for the past nine years, the vineyard shows remarkable health.”
“A vibrant, unwooded style of Verdelho with lashings of fruit aromas on the nose marrying with tropical fruit flavors and hints of spice on the palate. The wine stays focused and finishes crisp and dry yet has a powerful and refreshing length that makes this wine the perfect accompaniment to spicy, full flavoured dishes. Famous for its natural acidity, this variety ages beautifully. Cellaring for more than five years rewards with complex spice and honeysuckle and developing nutty and toasty characters.”
94 points, Erin Larkin for James Halliday’s Wine Companion “Hand picked over an 8-day period, fermented entirely in stainless steel to preserve freshness. Crunchy acidity and a salivating plump mid palate which is crammed to bursting with nashi pear, green apple, soft talcy florals and gentle suggestions of citrus pith. Incredibly pretty, almost dusty, very satisfying and has great length of flavour.”
