Description
Steve and Monique Lubiana established the estate in 1990 in Granton in the south of Tasmania. They have since built a reputation as one of the vanguard of Australian winegrowers, pushing boundaries with viticulture and winemaking techniques. Their beautiful vineyard on the banks of the Derwent was Tasmania’s first to be certified biodynamic. They have refined their range, which centres upon clear, characterful expressions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and world-class Tasmanian sparkling wines. They have continued to improve the vineyard and honed techniques in the winery, imbuing all the wines with greater texture and personality to make the most of the bright, natural acidity and transparent fruit that are the hallmark of Tasmania. Certified organic, biodynamic – Tasmania’s first.
‘The range under Stefano Lubiana’s banner is lengthy & the highlights are many. While there might be familiarity & finesse in much of Lubiana’s current collection of wines, there’s more excitement to come.’ – Mike Bennie, Gourmet Traveller WINE
From the winemaker: “The most layered and complex of the three Chardonnays we make, the ‘Estate’ is a classic example of a robust but beautifully balanced cool climate wine. This wine has all the elements of a great Chardonnay present – fruit, oak, acid, creamy texture and complexity, but no element overpowers the other. A wonderful wine to enjoy now, or watch it grow and develop over the years.”
94 points, Halliday Wine Companion “Textbook Tasmanian chardonnay that epitomises the tension and purity of a cool season in the Derwent Valley. Pitch-perfect white peach and lemon, framed in classy, toasted cashew nut French oak. A wonderfully crystalline finish of natural acid line. Give it time for oak to tuck into its pristine fruit.”
92 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “A good vintage in Tasmania. Gee, there is a surprisingly large amount of cinnamon, clove, and cedar oak here, which is OK for a wine with plenty of fruit weight, like this, but hey, you have to like a lot of biscuitty oak. Aside that, preserved lemon, peach and lavish clove spice. Toasty with bran-like complexity, tight with a chalky texture, and excellent length. It would be a much better wine without so much oak, but there you go, maybe it will settle with time in bottle. The overlay of winemaking is kind of overt, and surprising given the producer, but there you have it.”
