Description
Stargazer is a boutique, premium producer of some of the most exciting wines coming from Tasmania, predominantly from the Coal River Valley in the southern part of the Island where the range focuses on Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Winemaker Samantha Connew’s first vintage under Stargazer was in 2012 and after a long search her dream became a reality in 2016 when she purchased an 11 hectare site in the Coal River Valley, of which 1 hectare was planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Since then she has planted 2 more hectares compromising of Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with another 2 planned for planting in 2021.
About this wine from the winemaker, Samantha Connew: “The 2024 growing season was a contrast to the three prior cooler/wetter La Nina seasons, and this wine is just singing already. Stargazer use fruit from their own Palisander vineyard in Coal River Valley + sourced from growers in the Upper Derwent Valley and Richmond. The Stargazer plot was planted in 2017, south-facing and is primarily brown dermosol on Jurassic dolerite.
“Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed directly to oak for fermentation. 100% wild ferment in 500L French oak(Mercurey), 20% new. Full malolactic. No lees stirring, left in barrel for 8 months, then blended in tank for 6 weeks before bottling.
“Pale straw in colour, on the nose it is all bright fresh lemon peel and ripe white peaches. Custard pastry and cashew nuts with subtle flinty layer add a secondary layer under the primary fruit. The generous stonefruit upfront on the palate is framed by judicious use of oak, with long flavours of almonds and honeycomb finishing with a pink sea salt briny drive.”
95 points, Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion “Pale straw with aromas of green apple, lime and grapefruit with hints of flint, clover blossom, wildflowers, distant crushed herbs, cold chamomile tea, crushed stone, sea spray and ozone. There is just a touch of texture on the palate, which shows a focused mineral line and excellent tension between the inherent citrus and apple fruit tones and the chalky mineral cadence. Lovely stuff; crisp, composed drinking.”
