Description

“Chardonnay, too, reaches Burgundian levels of pristine complexity in the hands of producers such as Neudorf.” — David Williams, The Guardian UK 10 September 2015

“I have a thing for Kiwi Chardonnay. Its day will come. It doesn’t currently get the respect it deserves, but with wines like these from Neudorf … things will change.” Jamie Goode’s Wine Blog.

“I cannot think of another New Zealand wine producer that has been making top wines across their entire range as consistently as Neudorf over three decades. Chardonnay is the star with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc very close behind.”  Bob Campbell MW

“One of New Zealand’s most admired producers. Tim and Judy Finn have a great track record.” Jancis Robinson MW, 2012

The pristine and spectacularly beautiful Nelson region in the south island of NZ and in particular the Clay Gravel Moutere Hills area receive lots of sun (more than 2300 hours a year) making it one of New Zealand’s sunniest regions a real bonus for such a cool climate region. Clear skies allow for rapid cooling at night, nurturing the slow development of flavours and a gradual reduction in fruit acids. This combination of climate and soil type produces white wines of concentration and texture, and rich savoury Pinot Noir with a fingerprint of textured minerally fruit acid.

Established in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, Neudorf use sustainable practices and the winery is accredited under the Sustainable Winery NZ scheme, which Tim was instrumental in establishing back in the early 80’s.   Winemaker Todd Stevens aim is always to allow the site to speak.  Great wines have a basis of fruit concentration, length and sense of place – characters which can be formed only in the vineyard.

Named after Tim and Judy’s daughter Rosie. Her block sits on the hill overlooking the home block. Winemaking is very similar to Moutere, their flagship Chardonnay – 100% malolactic fermentation and only about 15 % new oak.
Notes from the winemaker about the 2018 release: “This vintage shows Rosie’s Block as a textural, flowing wine which glides across the palate. It brings a sense of completeness as every note is embraced to be part of a rich whole.
There is the expected tension in the wine but some generous stonefruit (not so generous as to be tiresome; just enough to soothe and intrigue). Mineral notes are exhibited and there is a welcome refreshing note at the finish. Oak is simply an echo in the background, not overstepping the mark at all.
It’s complex but understandable – a wine you can pour, enjoy and smack your lips together and think of pouring another glass to enjoy with a roast chicken smothered in lemon and olive oil, maybe grilled flounder or chuck some sweet diamond clams into your linguine. Masterful.”
Jancis Robinson MW “Good, crisp, exuberantly fruity Chardonnay with sufficient corset and minerality to make it really refreshing yet approachable. Very well done!”
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine FrontThey make very good chardonnay over at Neudorf. Reliably good. Floral, perfumed, cashew, mango and stone fruit, spice tucked in. It delivers flavour smoothly, has gloss and glide, but keeps itself nice and tight with some bright citrus acidity and flavour, and flinty highlights. Finish is long and harmonious. It’s a great thing to drink.”

94 points, Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak “13% alcohol. Moutere clay gravel soils, wild ferment in 15% new oak. A taut, intense, focused expression of Chardonnay with a mineral core and tight lemon fruit, together with subtle creamy hints, a twist of hazelnut and subtle pineapple exoticism. There’s great energy to this wine, which is tightly furled with layers of flavour that emerge in the glass and mouth. A serious, focused effort of real appeal.”

93/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review  “Stylish chardonnay with peach, grapefruit, hazelnut, spicy oak and brioche flavours supported by gentle, fruity acidity. A weighty wine with a pleasingly silken texture.”
