Description

Kumeu River, northwest of Auckland is without a doubt NZ’s finest chardonnay producer.  Master of Wine and Winemaker Michael Brajkovich has been crafting fine chardonnay at the estate since the 1980’s.  Handpicked fruit and vigorous selection from the low yielding vines, whole bunch pressed, wild yeasts, a third of the fruit fermented in French oak barriques and full malolactic fermentation to soften the pristine acidity and add texture and dimension. Not surprising Michael is not shy in comparing his Chardonnays with the great White Burgundies like Domaine Leflaive!

“If you can taste history, duty and family pride in a glass, it’s there in the Kumeu River Chardonnays … some of New Zealand’s greatest Chardonnays, not to mention the world’s.Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, The Wine Advocate

“If these aren’t the best chardonnays in New Zealand (and some of the best in the world), I’d like to see what could roll them.” Huon Hooke, SMH, Oct 2012

From the winemaker, Michael Brajkovich MW. “Hunting Hill is a vineyard that was first planted in 1982 and became a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Maté’s Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Hunting Hill was replanted in 2000 and is now even better than before, giving beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive, mealy minerality.”

The excellent 2022 vintage came on the heels of three others, in a magnificent chain of four superb quality harvests .. The conditions during harvest were superb and 2022 produced a classic Hunting Hill. Very distinctive terroir driven typicity, with piercing lemon/lime fruit lift and florality on the nose, richness and volume in the mouth followed by lingering acidity and minerality on the finish. This is an absolute classic example of how great the Chardonnay grape can be: A beautifully powerful, yet elegant and complex wine with long term aging ability.

As winemaker Michael Brajkovich says “..the Single Vineyards are shining examples of the Kumeu style. The terroir differences between various parcels are very distinct, really highlighting their individual personalities.”

95+ points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate “The 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is mouthfilling and obvious in its outlay of flavor in the mouth—yellow peach, apricot, Golden Delicious apple, beeswax/lanolin and ripe lime flesh. The flutter of acidity that feathers the fruit is compelling and alluring in its power and juiciness. An exciting wine. It’s a wine I want to drink (I will; the perks) and a wine I am enjoying considering too. It’s intellectual and sensorial/corporeal in equal measure. The Hunting Hill Vineyard was planted in 1982 and overlooks Mate’s Vineyard. This is a pleasurable, exciting, fleshy, complex, salty, kaleidoscopic wine. Excellent.”
96 points, Thomas Parker MW, Farr Vintners The 2022 Hunting Hill is steely and tightly wound with a little lime blossom on the nose, typical of this vineyard in great vintages. Very pale in the glass, the aromas expand with air, showing layers of salted limes, struck flint, mandarin oil and subtle wood spice. The palate is coiled, acid-driven and very youthful – this wine will need two years in bottle before approaching and won’t hit its peak for a decade. There is a sense of pithy citrus fruit from phenolic structure; lemon blossom and more of the saline, savoury spices unfurl on the mid-palate. There is such depth and underlying power here, revealing itself more towards the finish, which expands with a flourish of riper orchard fruit. Very long, vertical and finely balanced, this is another very promising Hunting Hill that warrants patience.”
