Description
A small family owned Domaine in the heart of the Côte-d’Or in the village of Magny-les-Villers, just outside Nuits-St-Georges. With holdings on 14 titles in both the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits, across 19 acres farmed organically and vinified traditionally resulting in pure whites and muscular reds that age well. Champions of the Ladoix appellation at the foot of the hill of Corton, this is Burgundy with soul.
The domaine was founded over forty years ago with winemaking in the hands of Alex Cornu who took over from his father Claude in 2008, although Claude is very much still a strong presence in the cellar. After working at Vosne Romanee’s most famous producer Romanee Conti for several years Claude returned to the family estate and grew holdings from 3 acres to the current holding of 19 acres with vines in some fantastic sites including Savigny Le Beaune, Ladoix, Pernand Vergelesses and the flagship holding on the famous Grand Cru hill of Corton.
The vineyard practices are predominantly organic or “Lutte Raisonee” practices (organic in principal just without formal certification) and produce vibrant fruit of high quality and low yields. In the winery wild yeasts are used and all reds are 100% destemmed with a mixture of barrel age and maturation depending on the cuvee.
From the southern part of Magny-lès-Villers, the 2 plots for the Hautes Cotes de Beaune are Castaing and Bully, just a stones throw to the north of famous Hill of Corton- Charlemagne. Vine Age is 20-25 years.
Traditional winemaking; The bunches of grapes are pressed directly after fermentation starts in tank, after one week the wine is put into oak via gravity. Fermentation is then finished in oak. No yeast added. 10-15% new wood and oaks barrels of 2-3-4 years old for the rest. Aged in 228 litre barriques for 12 to 14 months.
About 2021 vintage by Burghound: ‘The best attribute of the finest 2021 whites is just how strikingly pure they are and as such, just how beautifully the underlying terroir speaks…. There is also terrific energy and definition to the palate impressions along with a bracing salinity and as such, they are already a pleasure to drink as the first sip invites the second.’ Allen Meadows, Burghound, October 2022.
Fantastic energy and intensity of orchard fruits…. nectarine, white peach, citrus and mineral tones with some more-ish oak texture of roasted nuts and cedar.. Excellent drive on the finish here.. A fine white burgundy not to be missed!
