Description
‘Pete and his partner Magali Gely operate what I think is the best new wave of small scale Barossa wine companies to emerge at the beginning of the 21st century These weren ™t big. blockbuster. showy wines designed to impress. They were wines that managed to take the best of the Barossa ™s sometimes forgotten varietal traditions and fuse them onto a very European flavour sensibility. ‘ Max Allen. The future makers
‘It seems that Spinifex wines can do no wrong. ‘ Campbell Mattinson. The Wine Front.
“The Shiraz fruit for this wine comes from a site sitting at around 420 metres on the eastern edge of the Barossa. The ˜Rocky Valley ™ has provided base materials for other Spinfex wines. but winemaker Pete Schell and his partner Magali Gely decided it was good enough to bottle on its own. It ™s all about provenance for this wine. The 2009 vintage simply demanded a single vineyard bottling. An explosive entry with cinnamon. cloves and fenugreek then pitch black berry fruit and an underlying. gentle stemminess. The palate fills with forest berry flavours and again shows some suggestion of stems. but with wet earth. and more of the quixotic spice of the bouquet. Though there is some cool feralness going on. it pulses with freshness and verity of fruit. Undeniably a super energy to this wine. it ™s power packed yet without meaty obtrusion. and finishes very long. An exciting entry to the Spinifex stable. though a bit more straight up and down. 93 POINTS ” The Wine Front.
