Winemaker. Bryan Martin has a day job working at Clonakilla as Tim Kirk ™s right hand man. Ravensworth is his own label and I love this shiraz because it has it all! Juicy rich fruit. black cherries. violets. rose petals. savoury earthy depth and freshness It is the continental climate of Murrumbateman (hot days followed by cold nights and mornings) which means the shiraz ripens fully producing natural raspberry freshness with a savoury liquorice. tarriness and spice. It is medium bodied and reminds me of the wines from Cote Rotie in France
Gold Medal 2013 Canberra Wine Show.
94 points James Halliday … “First hail. then rain. endeavoured to destroy the crop. but only succeeded in sharply reducing the yield. It is strikingly fragrant. with spice. red fruits and the often talked about. but rarely seen (by me). violets. The polished. medium bodied palate picks up the flavour cues of the bouquet. and tops and tails them with some very attractive savoury nuances. ”
92 points Chris Shanahan. Good Food and Wine … “Winemaker Bryan Martin says a small crop of shiraz survived ˜ ˜the hail and biblical downpour of the 2012 vintage ™ ™. Small. perhaps. but the surviving fruit made a terrific wine. On first opening. heady floral aromas dominate and are reflected on the palate. But after a good splash. the aromas expand to include spices. pepper. ripe red berries and a light stalky stemmy character. These are all consistent with high quality. cool grown shiraz co fermented with viognier “ and in contact with whole bunches (and hence stems). The flavours on the medium bodied palate reflect the aroma. while fine. persistent tannins add grip and length to the smooth. deeply textured palate. It ™s a fragrant. elegant. fine boned shiraz with good medium term cellaring potential. ”
90 points Rob Geddes MW … “Excellent colour with a bright ruby rim. Blackberry.floral. apricot and spice notes with a peppery savoury edge. The palate has good construction of just ripe fruit flavours with a viognier lift and the tannins are firm in the middle palate and need a little time to soften and unlock the black berry fruit. Drink after 2015. ”
