Description
Founded by Pierre Gosset in 1584 in Ay ( the heart of Champagne near Bollinger) and is the oldest Champagne House and yet the smallest Grande Marque Champagne producer making approx 50.000 cases a year. Today it is owned by the Cointreau family who are very much handson to ensure handcrafted quality continues! Quality is this prime focus and the signature house style is about finesse /freshness and quality sourcing only grand and premier cru fruit from 60 growers ( for complexity) first pressing juice (finesse) and base wines fermented in old oak barrels ( more depth and complexity). no malolactic fermentation (heightened acidity and age worthiness) and extended lees ageing ( complexity). No doubt about it for champagne afficianados around the world ( me included!) Gosset is the ultimate in luxury champagne.
This was handsdown my favourite Champagne of a recent Gosset tasting (preferred it over their vintage wines!) A blend of 43% chardonnay. 42% pinot noir. 15% pinot meunier from the 2005. 2006 and 2007 vintages followed by four to five years on lees. Intense stone fruit. citrus. floral characters with extraordinarily depth and complexity of french patissier. roasted nuts and hints of charcuterie.
Astonishing elegance. length and balance here.
