18/20. Jeremy Pringle … “If you want a signpost of just how amazing Tumbarumba Chardonnay can be. then look no further than this wine. Effectively the entry level Chardonnay for Eden Road. yet made like something much more expensive. this is a blend of Courabyra and Maragle vineyard fruit that was destemmed and fed straight into a mix of old and new barrels for fermentation. with no S02 used during maturation and 50% of the barrels going through malo. The result is a beautifully proportioned Chardonnay with a delicate. lemon drop nose and excellent acidity running the length of the palate. There is a noticeable banana ferment/solids character. but everything is cleaned up by sparkling acidity to finish magic acidity really. with excellent balance and freshness. A wonderfully vital Chardonnay that is driven by soft. real acidity. this perhaps could do with a little more power. but an excellent wine nonetheless. Very much looking forward to the more premium Eden Road Chardonnays! ”
Canberra is an exciting region at the moment. and there are many new players hitting unthinkable heights of quality. Winemaker Nick Spencer has demonstrated “ across a whole range of styles and prices “ that Eden Road Wines is a force to be reckoned with. Nick Stock. The Age/SMH Good Wine Guide.
The Eden Road wines all derive primarily from the ACT/NSW ˜High Country ™ regions of Canberra District. Hilltops. Gundagai and Tumbarumba. Eden Road is supposed to suggest an ideal (as in the Garden of Eden). not a place.
The 2012 vintage was incredible for Chardonnay in Tumbarumba. Whilst being very challenging there was the perfect balance between sunlight heat and cool night temperatures. that has resulted in producing a Chardonnay that bears all the hallmarks of great high country Chardonnay pristine aromas of white peach. grapefruit. citrus and white flowers along with a very subtle element of spice. The palate is generous and textural yet finishes with great length due to the natural acidity. Put simply. at this price. Chardonnay doesn ‘t get much more exciting or refreshing.
“Mealy. white peach. subtle floral. some citrus. Has texture. fine acidity. plenty of savoury and milky Chablis like (sorry) flavour and a long clean finish. ‘That ‘s just bloody excellent! ‘. I ‘ve exclaimed in my notes. and now I ‘ve also self quoted to top it off. Tight and fine. Racy is the word we often use. So impressive. Modern and precise. Had 93 94 written down. so lets go with 93+. ” Gary Walsh. The Wine Front
