Stephen George wears 3 winemakers ™ hats. one for his Ashton Hills wines coming from his estate vineyard high in the Adelaide Hills. one for Galah Wines and the other for the iconic Wendouree in Clare. He refers to his dry grown Piccadilly Valley vineyard planted back in 1982 as the Burgundy of the Adelaide Hills . Much experimentation with pinot noir clones (15 clones planted) and trellising has resulted in sublime pinot noir. Ashton Hills has received many awards including the coveted 5 Red star rating from James Halliday.

97 points James Halliday “Deep crimson purple colour. a specialty of Ashton Hills. the ultimate iron fist in a velvet glove. the fist surrounded by waves of sumptuous plum. red cherry and black cherry. The balance and harmony is utterly exceptional. the future of the wine limitless. may well prove to be one of the all time great wines of Ashton Hills. ”
95 points Campbell Mattinson. The Wine Front … “Straight up. immediately on opening. this offers superb pinot noir drinking. I can see why Ashton Hills pinot has long since rung my bells. It ™s long and sinewy and yet flush with gorgeously ripe. seductive. fruit and oak flavour. Black pepper. cherry plum. swish cedary notes. cranberry and rose petals. Clovey. gum leaf notes also play a role. as does a slight kick of alcohol on the finish. For pure. meaty/spicy. concentrated power. this wine takes some beating. ”
97 points Chris Shanahan. goodfood.com “For all the talk of terroir. the best wines. in any region. come from those making the fewest compromises in every step through vineyard. harvest. grape transport. winemaking. maturation. bottling and storage. Stephen George ™s wines show these perfectionist traits year after year. So on a recent visit to the cellar. it was no surprise to taste pinots probably as good as they ™ll ever be out of the Adelaide Hills “ each showing the character of its vintage … The reserve 2012 revealed the beauty of an exceptional year “ pinot with extra fruity depth. flesh. power and layers of flavour. all without losing its ˜ ˜pinosity ™ ™. that hard to describe character separating pinot from other varieties. ”
95 Jeremy Pringle. “Wine Will Eat Itself ” “… Satin texture and a powerful depth of cherry and black raspberry fruit. Cracked pepper seasoning and a good deal of it along with a dash of cinnamon as a counterpoint. That creamy. clove spiced wood frames the wine without dominating it. Some minty lift works well within the overall context. Terrific flow. The ultra fine tannins which conclude the affair are sensual and emphatic. I doff my hat. “
