Ashton Hills has the oldest pinot vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Stephen George wears 3 winemakers ™ hats. one for his Ashton Hills wines coming from his estate vineyard high in the Adelaide Hills. one for Galah Wines and the other for the iconic Wendouree in Clare. He refers to his dry grown Piccadilly Valley vineyard planted back in 1982 as the Burgundy of the Adelaide Hills . Much experimentation with pinot noir clones (15 clones planted) and trellising has resulted in sublime pinot noir. Ashton Hills has received many awards including the coveted 5 Red star rating from James Halliday.
Piccadilly Valley is Ashton Hills ™ entry level or village wine with all grapes coming from the Adelaide Hills ™ coldest wine sub region. the Piccadilly Valley. About half the wine comes from 16 of estate clones (selections) with the remaining grapes being purchased from two neighbouring growers. The three vineyards have amongst them the oldest pinot vines in The Valley and are all managed in such a way to ensure small crops with maximum flavour and concentration. No escaping the fact that the 2011 vintage was an incredibly challenging one yet despite this Stephen George has created a really impressive wine here. No Reserve wine was produced and fruit destined for the Estate Pinot has been bottled under the Piccadilly PV label. For the astute pinophile buying the 2011 Piccadilly will mean top quality and value for the price!
Stephen George says … “Bottled in March 2012 the 2011 P.V. is medium brick red in colour with an attractive cherry. plum. berry nose and with already a hit of barnyard complexity. There is sweet fruit along the length of the medium weight palate while a touch of stalky tannin lengthens the palate and provides the bit of grip so important for rood and longevity. I think you ‘ll find the wine quite delicious now but suggest cellaring for around five years if it ‘s those developed. funky. forest floor characters you ‘re after. ”
