Description
Ashton Hills has the oldest pinot vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Stephen George wears 3 winemakers ™ hats. one for his Ashton Hills wines coming from his estate vineyard high in the Adelaide Hills. one for Galah Wines and the other for the iconic Wendouree in Clare. He refers to his dry grown Piccadilly Valley vineyard planted back in 1982 as the Burgundy of the Adelaide Hills . Much experimentation with pinot noir clones (15 clones planted) and trellising has resulted in sublime pinot noir. Ashton Hills has received many awards including the coveted 5 Red star rating from James Halliday.
With 50% Estate fruit and 50% ‘Cemetery ‘ vineyard material this is the classic Ashton Hills Piccadilly Valley blend. Tasting both wines side by side it ‘s pretty clear what the Estate portion of the blend brings to proceedings. This wine ‘s aromatics are at a higher register. its texture exhibits more juiciness. and there is also a seam of sappy. pine needle like freshness lifting the fruit and keeping everything fresh and energetic. This is again great value for money. “The better wine? ” asks George rhetorically. “Completely up to you. ” He ‘s right.
‘This release is deeply flavoured but fresh. lively and complex. It sings. Cherry plum notes with mocha and savoury spice notes shot through. Cranberried sweetness/juiciness through the mid palate. Strings of taut but well integrated tannin. Will age well but is drinking very nicely in its youth. ‘ 91+ points. Campbell Mattinson. winefront.com.au
