If you should visit La Morra, there are two locations you shouldn’t miss, both perched on the top of this Langhe hill. One is the stunning view from the top of the town with sweeping views of Barolo DOCG, and the other, on the main square, is the Marcarini winery that dates back to the 1700’s. Luisa Marcarini and Manuel Marchetti have been in charge of Luisa’s family winery since 1990, with Luisa orchestrating the wines with consultant oenologist Armando Cordero and Manuel in charge of marketing. The Marcarini’s were the first in the area to designate a single vineyard on their label (1958 Brunate) and their 150 year old Boschi di Berri Dolcetto vineyard is the oldest in Italy, having survived phylloxera and maintained indigenous rootstock. The Marcarini style is poised between classic and modern, history and hi tech and the wines are characterised by a voluptuous, embracing style that complements the region’s traditional austerity and blockbuster structure.
Made from Moscato Bianco from a century old property at Sergentin in the commune of Neviglie. Low in alcohol (5.5%) with the varieties natural sweetness retained, the wine foams when poured to remain frizzante on the palate with a refreshing grapey finish. Great with creamy desserts, fruit, pastries and at breakfast!
Enjoy this wonderful tasting note from the winery: “Moscato d’Asti is an extraordinary dessert wine, sweet, aromatic and slightly sparkling. It is one of our land’s greatest prides, unique throughout the world. The vine is the ancient Moscato bianco del Piemonte (white Moscato of Piedmont), already known in Ancient Roman times and currently cultivated with love in our “Cascina Sargentin” vineyards, a zone highly adapted for growing this particular variety.
The wine has a brilliant straw-yellow color with soft green reflections. A delicate white froth evolves into a very fine and persistent perlage. Its full nose is aromatic, floral and fruity as well as intense and persistent. The taste, pleasantly sweet and fresh due to the low alcohol content and correct acidity, is smooth and rich with musky sensations typical of the Moscato grape: the wine’s aromatic persistence is very long and intense.
The dessert wine par excellence, it pairs well with fresh pastries and cakes, the classic panettone, all kinds of baked desserts and fruit. To better appreciate the wine’s extraordinary bouquet, it should be served in a classic crystal glass at a temperature of around 10°C.
The new vintage is here! Incredibly consistent wine from this producer.
Review for 2023 … 90 points, Decanter “At only 5% alcohol and with 131g/L residual sugar, this very gently sparkling wine is fully sweet but in a delightfully fresh style, not in the least bit unctuous. Bright and aromatic on the nose with peach, lemon sherbet, and white flowers. Described as perfect for summer and a great match for fruit salads, pastries, and birthday cake.”
90 points, Wine enthusiast “Apricot, peach blossoms, candied lemon zest and cut mint quickly lift from the glass of this Moscato. Zippy acidity keeps the lush and fruit-forward palate in balance as the wine finishes with a light and refreshing fizziness.” Jeff Porter
