Description
Ashton Hills has the oldest pinot vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Stephen George wears 3 winemakers’ hats – one for his Ashton Hills wines coming from his estate vineyard high in the Adelaide Hills, one for Galah Wines and the other for the iconic Wendouree in Clare. He refers to his dry grown Piccadilly Valley vineyard planted back in 1982 as the “Burgundy of the Adelaide Hills.” Ashton Hills has received many awards including the coveted 5 Red star rating from James Halliday.
Fine sparkling wine made from 100% Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir fruit (method champenoise). Salmon pink in colour with a full, soft mousse palate and fine persistent bubbles. Strawberry and cherry aromas and some biscuit/bready complexity. Great length, purity and freshness here following the excellent 2010 vintage.
95 points James Halliday … “Sourced from the estate vineyard and from the Piccadilly Valley floor. whole bunch pressed. fermented in old French oak with tartrate deposits. no mlf. but 6% table pinot noir added. The first of two disgorgements. this from Apr ’12. Bright pale pink. without any salmon evident. but that ‘s of purely academic interest. pinot noir table wine was added to the base. partly for colour. but also to bolster the red cherry and strawberry of this alluring bottle fermented wine. “
92 points Rob Geddes MW .. “Salmon here refers to the pale pink orange colour. Quality lies in the yeasty fresh bread aromas lending a subtle vegemite and sea side iodine like edge to the cooking strawberry conserve aromas. The palate is full in the middle with strawberry fruit reined in by fresh acidity and tannin. This is a great style for food as its subtle strength will partner a wide range of food particularly Japanese. drinking till 2019 “
“Ashton Hills is one of Australia’s finest sparkling roses and also one of its best value. Extended ageing on lees contributes biscuity complexity to its gentle strawberry hull and red cherry guise. It’s a delicate, pretty style with great mineraity.” Tyson Stelzer Wine 100 August 09.
