Vincent Paris is a native of Cornas and his first vintage was in 1997. He made his first couple of vintages with his uncle, legendary Cornas vigneron Robert Michel. He inherited most of his vineyards (some of which are 100+ years old) from his grandfather and purchased some from his uncle on his retirement in 2006.
Vincent Paris, co-president of the appellation of Cornas with Jacques Lemencier, owns 6 hectares of vineyards and produces about 2,500cs per year of which 1,600cs are Cornas. The biodynamically farmed vineyards are located in various parcels along the southeast facing Cornas slope and a small plot in St. Joseph. He prunes only four bunches of grapes per vine (normal is between five and seven) which concentrates the flavours in the grapes and avoids the need to drop fruit for green harvests. Fermentation at low temperatures and maturation in old oak barrels for up to 12 months.
Vincent’s wines exhibit power, yet possess a determined freshness and elegance to them. His Granit 30 and Granit 60 take their names from the slope and gradient of the vineyards and average vine age respectively. Vincent’s famed Geynale parcel is comprised exclusively of old vines planted in 1910. Vincent Paris is without a doubt one of the rising stars of the Rhône Valley.
This fine St Joseph hails from biodynamic estate grown plot of 25 year old Syrah vines. This shy, modest vigneron is so obsessed with the vineyard and has a remarkable ability to pick ripe fruit and maintain low alcohols with minimal influence of oak. Mouthwatering aromatics in this fine wine, purity of fruit, fine grained tannin structure and finesse. 13%
93 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “No mistaking this for anything other than Northern Rhône! Incredibly vivid purple colour also of note. Fresh blackberry, charcuterie, black pepper, dried herbs and flowers. It’s medium-bodied, firm almost frisky ‘glassy’ acidity, smoky and meaty, crushed rocks, distinctly tangy, but encased in boysenberry and fresh picked blackberry. Vibrant. Tight and slate-y to close. You have to like them gamey and spicy, but excellent wine here, in that sort of style”
91-93 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media “Vibrant blackberry and cherry liqueur aromas are complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper, pungent flowers and smoked meat. Juicy black/blue fruit and allspice flavors show very good energy and become weightier with air while maintaining focus. Fine-grained tannins add framework to the spice- and floral-driven finish, which leaves a building mineral note behind. “
