Description

Rocky Gully Wines hail from the award winning Frankland Estate in Frankland River, the coolest and most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia. Warm days, cool nights (maritime influenced by the proximity to the Great Southern Ocean – means milder summers and winters) optimum ripening conditions, sustainable organic practices and a pristine pollution free environment are all contributing factors to the fine wines it produces. Frankland Estate in 2010 were certified organic. They call the Rocky Gully wines their “second generation of Frankland Estate” and these are more than just a mere second label …  same pristine quality of fruit and uncompromising quality at a bargain price.

About this wine:  Deep crimson with purple hues. Rich, dense fruit notes on the nose. Plum, blackberries and cherries are balanced by a hint of oak and spice. A touch of black pepper adds to the complexity. Juicy, textural introduction leads to a long fleshy finish on the palate. Medium weighted, spicey mid palate. Hints of plum and mulberry add to the alure of this wine.

Small additions of Touriga Nacional and Malbec gives complexity and aromatic lift followed with subtle texture. Good acidity and fine tannins combine to create a soft finishing, well weighted cool climate style. Ideal food wine which will complement many dishes including pork, lamb and duck. Drink now for the next 5 to 7 years.

92 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front This is a good wine, and it’s good value. It’s a spicy, medium-weight style of shiraz, with a touch of positive reduction helping it along, with bell pepper and black pepper characters wedded to cherry-plum fruit. There’s also the merest whisper of musky vanilla, though oak is a low-impact player here. The tannin has a grainy, grunty aspect to it but then, it’s not overdone, and not dominant. There are no question marks here, everything is positive, though a slight warmth to the alcohol is the only thing you’d point to, if you were forced. It’s no real matter and besides, even at full price the value here is decidedly in the buyer’s favour.”

91 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “When a shiraz is priced keenly, grown in a region making superfine examples and made by a producer who is top-notch, well, the wine will be too. This is awash with dark plums, licorice and baking spices, menthol and plump, ripe tannins, plus plenty of acidity. It’s fuller bodied but not too big, just a little alcohol warmth on the finish – with food, less obvious.”
