Description

Award winning family owned and operated boutique winery Frankland Estate is located in Frankland River, the coolest and most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia. Warm days, cool nights (maritime influenced by the proximity to the Great Southern Ocean – means milder summers and winters) optimum ripening conditions, sustainable organic practices and a pristine pollution free environment are all contributing factors to the fine wines it produces.

Fruit for this wine was sourced from three different locations in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. The vine canopy is trained on a combination of vertical shoot and Geneva Double Curtin (GDC). The Isolation Ridge Vineyard is managed under organic principles (certified organic 2010), a practice we feel important for reflecting the uniqueness of site.

This wine was fermented as long and slowly as possible, at temperatures not exceeding 20C in open fermentation tanks that allowed the cap to be worked by plunging and gently pumping over. An extended maceration period followed completion of the ferment to allow optima, flavour and tannin extraction. It was aged for 18 months in 500 litre French oak puncheons.

Brooding yet an element of florals on the nose with lifted pepper and spice. This elegant yet intensely flavoured wine shows as it opens in the glass its ability to age, A sweet core of red currant and plum flavoured fruit leads into the subtle use of French oak which sits comfortably with the fine-grained tannins giving the wine a presence and length. Savoury, briary fruits lead into an enticing ironstone flinty note and mineral complexity. The small addition of viognier and malbec add to the wines complexity. A fine example of an outstanding vintage in Frankland River, it is approachable now but has the structure and finesse to reward long term cellaring. Dry mild conditions provided another ideal vintage in the Frankland River region. This provided balance, elegance and complexity to the wine which will benefit ageing.

95 points, Jane Faulkner for James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2018 “This will morph into something rather special – it’s too youthful now but already it has the hallmarks of a finely-tuned, expressive Frankland River shiraz. Heady aromatics of florals, dark fruit, licorice, pepper and wood spices with chiselled tannins and clearly defined oak. Some creaminess on the palate adds another layer of complexity.”  Aug 2017.

92+ points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Single vineyard shiraz from the Frankland River region.  It’s both solid and elegant. It sounds like a contradiction in terms but it somehow pulls it off. It’s a meaty, graphite-infused red with peppercorn and black cherry flavours swooshing through. There’s a clip of smoky oak too. Not a hair out of place. Quite lovely.”
