Description

Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene (Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards (some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention – wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid).

Huon Hooke said: “ Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…” Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe.   Lisa Perrotti-Brown, from leading international website erobertparker.com said – “..a breath of fresh air in this area where a lot of producers seem to be following the herd down that incredibly ripe and sometimes over-ripe path that has caused not a few producers to come unstuck in heat-wave and drought conditions. These are superbly-crafted, well-priced wines that are wholeheartedly recommended’.

From the winemaker about the 2020: “In 2016 we decided to craft a single vineyard Syrah that showed the elegance and complexity that this grape variety is capable of in cooler regions. The Syrah was sourced from the block next to our winery in Kuitpo.

“The Syrah was fermented using natural yeast over a period of three weeks in open fermenters. 15% whole bunch fruit was included in the ferment to provide some ripe stalk tannin and a hint of carbonic maceration to the texture, aroma and flavour profile. Pressing was conducted using a small ½ tonne Mori basket press to give a soft tannin profile, hard pressings were not included. Maturation in 30% new French and 70% used French barriques provides a hint of savoury oak character whilst allowing the fruit characters to be expressed unhindered. The use of mixed cooperages (Seguin-Moreau, Nadalie, Marsannay, Vallurine, Darguad & Jaegle) provides complexity, integration and harmony with our intended style. A single racking and regular topping are the only time the wine is disturbed post malo with 16 months spent in wood. Bottling date is determined when the tannin and oak balance feel right, with a further 12 months spent in bottle prior to release. The traditional approach used to make The Garden of Perfume & Spice Syrah precludes the use of the additives and fining agents such as tannins, enzymes, egg, fish or milk products. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in July of 2021.”

“The Garden of Perfume and Spice provides an array of vibrant blueberry and forest fruits accented by notes of nutmeg, black pepper and lavender. The medium-bodied palate provides great depth and complexity of flavour with a silky tannin finish. Drink now to 2030”

94 points, James Suckling “A very open, pretty syrah with succulent brambleberry, spice, black pepper, and cloves. Some bark, too. Full-bodied and creamy with a beautiful length and intensity. So delicious now but will be even better with age. Try after 2024.”

91 points, Erin Larkin for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Aptly named, this 2020 The Garden of Perfume & Spice Syrah is the epitome of fresh spice, red fruit and a delicious (almost moreish) freshness through the finish. The wine is supple and silky in its textural outlay of tannin and, once again, shows that Coates is a brilliant producer at the various price points on offer. Smart +.”
