Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene (Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards (some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention – wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid).
Huon Hooke said: “ Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…” Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, from leading international website erobertparker.com said – “..a breath of fresh air in this area where a lot of producers seem to be following the herd down that incredibly ripe and sometimes over-ripe path that has caused not a few producers to come unstuck in heat-wave and drought conditions. These are superbly-crafted, well-priced wines that are wholeheartedly recommended’.
From the winemaker: In 2015 we decided to source Syrah from cool climate vineyards and make a wine that showed the elegance and complexity that this grape variety is capable of. The Syrah was sourced primarily from Adelaide Hills next to our winery, with fruit also coming from Robe (a couple of vineyard blocks along from where our Malbec is sourced) and Langhorne Creek. Vine age ranges from 16 to 45 years. The Syrah from the three regions were individually refmented using natural yeast over a period of three weeks in open fermenters. 10% whole bunch fruit was included in the ferment to provide some ripe stalk tannin and a hint of carbonic maceration to the texture, aroma and flavour profile. Maturation in 30% new French and 70% used French barriques provides a hint of savoury oak character whilst allowing the fruit characters to be expressed unhindered. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The Garden of Perfume and Spice provides an array of vibrant blueberry and forest fruits accented by notes of nutmeg, black pepper and lavender. The medium-bodied palate provides great depth and complexity of flavour with a silky tannin finish. Drink now to 2025.
95 Points, James Halliday “ An elegant wine singing the same song from the first whiff of the bouquet through to the finish, blackberry and blueberry faithfully replayed on the immaculately balanced palate, likewise oak and gently savoury/foresty tannins.”
