Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene (Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards (some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention – wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid).
Huon Hooke said: “Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…” Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe.” Lisa Perrotti-Brown, from leading international website erobertparker.com said – “..a breath of fresh air in this area where a lot of producers seem to be following the herd down that incredibly ripe and sometimes over-ripe path that has caused not a few producers to come unstuck in heat-wave and drought conditions. These are superbly-crafted, well-priced wines that are wholeheartedly recommended’.
This fine rose 100% Pinot Noir hails from the cool clime of Kuipto in Adelaide Hills. Natural yeast fermentation was performed in seasoned French oak barriques (Dargaud & Jaegle coopered) then left on lees. Partial malolactic proceeded before bottling after nine months in barrels.Lovely depth of red fruits with plenty of savoury texture and balance. Typical of Duane Coates quest to overdeliver with this reserve style that benefits from decanting and cries out for food… Previous vintage was marketed at $30 so we are in absolute bargain territory here!
92 points, Toni Patterson MW, The Real Review “Appealing strawberry shortcake aromas and flavours with background savouriness. The palate is deliciously textured and gently spicy, with excellent depth and freshness. Old oak ageing. A purposely made rosé. Showcase alongside food. Superb value 19 Sep 2017”
Phillip White, drinkster.blogspot.com “… pale pinkish Pinot noir this time. This is probably the whitest-smelling of the trio. Apart from some totally disarming strawberry, it’s all prickly summery dust. And it’s dry as a crow’s caaaaark. And oh yes there’s that rosey rise of turkish delight. And the nuts and maraschino of fresh soft nougat. Lime pith. Opium den. Smoked salmon, fennel, sour cream, capers. Swoon city. See, it doesn’t really smell white. It smells pink. Plush silky pink. My courtier advises me men are hot into pink right now. I’m a goner.” RRP $30 Bargain!
