Description
Made by Pinot Noir specialist and award winning organic winery Greystone in North Cantebury in New Zealand’s South Island. Winemaker Dominic Maxwell and viticulturist, Nick Gill are rising stars of the industry and this stunning Waipara Valley estate on the Omihi slopes with its clay-limestone soils and free draining gravels is perfect for growing Pinot Noir. An exceptional north facing site, limestone hills slope down to clay, the perfect combination for growing wines with minerality and concentration. Whilst Thistle Ridge may be their second label you are still getting the same estate grown fruit, meticulous hands-on winemaking so high quality to value ratio.
Produced predominantly from Dijon clones, 2014 was a cool vintage producing great acid and delicate aromatics. Dark ruby red colour with gorgeous aroma of black cherry, raspberry, mocha and more-ish tar and smoky notes. Lovely fresh acidity and length with lingering depth of ripe berry fruits, baking spices and finely integrated oak. This is a delightful Pinot that seriously over delivers … lovely purity of red and black fruits, finely textured with great complexity. Don’t miss snapping up a box of this!
Awarded “Vineyard of the Year” at 2016 NZ Organic Wine award.
17.5/20 points, Raymond Chan, NZ’s leading wine writer “Even ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, lighter on edge. The nose is full and up-front with ripe dark red berry and plum fruit aromas, along with raspberry jam and fruit pastille confectionary lift, indicating whole berry fermentation. The fruit is quite primary and youthful, building in depth with time in the glass. Medium-full bodied, up-front, plush, juicy and jammy fruit flavours of dark raspberries, cherries and plums are the feature on the palate. Some bright confectionary elements and red florals lift the fruit. The mouthfeel is soft and lush, and the fruit supported by supple, mellow tannins and integrated acidity providing a smooth, rounded structure. The fruit presence prevails, filling the mouth and carrying easily to a jam and confectionary nuanced, dry-textured finish. This is an up-front, soft and juicy Pinot Noir with confectionary notes and a supple mouthfeel. Serve with antipasto, tapas and Asian fare over the next 4 years. Predominantly Dijon clone fruit fully destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 5 weeks on skins, with 15% of the wine aged 10 months in French oak, a small portion new.”
93 points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, NZ “Youthful yet harmonious and engaging; lovely lifted aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, clove and toasted almond lead to a succulent palate that is silky and elegant. The wine shows excellent fruit purity and persistency, and offers layers of fine texture and delightful fruit flavours. At its best: now to 2018.”
