Description

Andrew Marks is making some of the finest wines in the land from the Upper Yarra with his family’s iconic vineyard GemBrook Hill.  Wanderer Wines is his side project that screams of precise and finely detailed execution made with a sensitivity, care and obsessiveness that have quickly amassed a cult-like following. Only small amounts of each wine are made every year striving to deliver individual wines of flavour, character and balance. These upper Yarra Valley sites offer fruit from low yielding single vineyards with minimal wine making techniques to preserve the vineyard’s natural goodness, finesse and more-ishness. Don’t miss these.

Single vineyard wine from Yellingbo, at the Southern end of the Yarra Valley. Cane pruned MV6 clone on volcanic red soil with Nth Eastern aspect at 200m elevation.

2020 was a more classic season, very low cropping, light on colour, big on flavour .. has the goods! 20% whole bunches. Cold soak and fermentation in open fermenters. Wild ferment. Hand plunged. Large format oak. 30% new Damy Alliers French oak for 11 months on lees….

95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front : “It’s such pure Upper Yarra. Light, insistent, powerful-beyond-its-weight. Red cherries and cranberries, a bitumen aspect, dried herbs and woodsmoke, a tickle of reduction. Of the earth. From a garden. But ripe enough, fresh enough, welcoming. A lovely wine for sure.”

Reviews of 2019:

95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front  “This is a terrifically attractive Pinot Noir. In brand-new-release terms I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen such an inherently complex, and settled, release under this label. It’s expressive of undergrowth and strawberry, ripe red cherry, orange oil, sweet spice and more; not quite Unami but certainly savoury. It’s set with acid-riven tannin, which suggests that it will age beautifully over the medium term or longer, but it’s already on song for drinking.”

94 points, Jane Faulkner for Hallidays 2022 Australian Wine Companion “There are 20% whole bunches in the mix here and they really pack a punch, enhanced by the 30% new French oak. Twigs, wood char, violets, cherries and pips, aniseed and more besides. Fuller-bodied sinewy tannins yet lots of sweet fruit. Needs more time to find itself.”
