Description
Steve and Monique Lubiana established the estate in 1990 in Granton in the south of Tasmania. They have since built a reputation as one of the vanguard of Australian winegrowers, pushing boundaries with viticulture and winemaking techniques. Their beautiful vineyard on the banks of the Derwent was Tasmania’s first to be certified biodynamic. They have refined their range, which centres upon clear, characterful expressions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and world-class Tasmanian sparkling wines. They have continued to improve the vineyard and honed techniques in the winery, imbuing all the wines with greater texture and personality to make the most of the bright, natural acidity and transparent fruit that are the hallmark of Tasmania. Certified organic, biodynamic – Tasmania’s first.
‘The range under Stefano Lubiana’s banner is lengthy & the highlights are many. While there might be familiarity & finesse in much of Lubiana’s current collection of wines, there’s more excitement to come.’ – Mike Bennie, Gourmet Traveller WINE
100% certified biodynamic, estate-grown, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from a mix of two terroirs: grey gravelly loams over clay and red loam over gravel. Fruit is hand picked and sorted by hand on a vibrating table. Matured in French oak for 8-10 months.
From the winemaker about this wine: “Hand-picked grapes are processed immediately to preserve their integrity and purity. The fruit undergoes wild fermentation in open top fermenters with a mixture of whole bunch and destemmed fruit. After fermentation the ferments are pressed first and then gravity fed to 225L French oak barriques in our underground cellar. The wine matures in these conditions until it is transferred to tank a month prior to bottling.
“The 2022 growing season was met with an extremely wet winter (one of the wettest on record). A cool and drying spring arrived, and a warm summer followed. These conditions led to healthy vines and grapes. The cooler temperatures and long ripening season allowed for steady accumulation of sugar, phenolics and aromas with the wines from 2022 showing bright acidity paired with great aromatic intensity, perfect for aging.
“The 2022 Estate Pinot Noir is a vibrant medium ruby red in the glass. Upon smelling the wine it leaps out of the glass displaying its seductive notes of young red raspberries, redcurrant and cranberries. Asian spices and such as star anise, dried rose petals and morello cherries also feature on the nose. The palate is silky with taut tannins. It is savoury and spicy showing additional notes of chinotto, cedar and a hint of cola. An aromatic and complex wine which will age extremely well. Cellar for 8+ years.” – Stefano Lubiana
Review for 2021 .. 95 points, Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion “Certified biodynamic Derwent Valley pinot noir from a mix of two terroirs: grey gravelly loams over clay and red loam over gravel. Such a pretty wine with bright colour and aromas of spiced red and dark cherries and raspberry top notes. Hints of exotic spices, jasmine, mushroom broth, sous bois, hanging game and earth. Mouth-filling and pure with everything you could ask from a Tasmanian pinot, finishing long, pure, savoury, complex and poised beautifully.”
