Description
The foundations for the Pike & Joyce brand were established in late 1997 with two long time south Australian families joining forces with the purchase of 22 ha of prime vineyard land at Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills. Planting commenced in 1998 and the first wines were subsequently released in 2002. Since then the Pike & Joyce range of wines have received numerous accolades and awards, winning trophies at wine shows both here and internationally. the opening of a brand new cellar door facility overlooking the vineyard at Lenswood underlines their commitment to the Adelaide Hills wine region and their vision to produce the best possible single vineyard wines that they can from this very special vineyard site.
From the winery about this vintage: “Although 2020 vintage will be remembered for extreme heat waves and bushfires, we were very lucky and escaped unscathed. The bushfires missed our vineyards metres, and we were unaffected by smoke taint. After a dry winter and spring, a heatwave in December and January, we received 60mm of rain in February along with perfect ripening conditions through to harvest. Resulting in wines of delicate flavours and high natural acidity.”
100% Estate grown Pinot Noir from Lenswood, Adelaide Hills. Wild yeast, open fermenters and matured for 8 months in French oak (6% new). Alc 13.5%
Light cherry red colour with attractive and complex aromas of red cherry and strawberry notes, a little of the forest floor and earthy characteristics you’d expect in a quality young Pinot. Displays just a touch of “charry” French oak too.
The concentration and depth of flavour belies the lighter colour of this wine. The palate is generous with sweet raspberry and cherry fruit, balanced with fine whole-bunch derived tannins and a core of mouth watering acidity. Displays the soft, lush finish typically associated with the variety and has excellent length and persistence.
From the winemaker: “The Rapide embraces everything we love about youthful Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir. Delicious, fresh and vibrant, one glass is rarely enough. Drink within 2-3 years, fantastic with Vietnamese grilled pork Bun cha.”
Review for 2019 .. “Red cherry, perfumed, floral notes, sweet fruit leaning. Soft yet spicy in the palate. Quite diffuse in flavour but retains a pleasing feel and ease of drinking. Delicate and neat, fresh and fine. Good drinking.” 90 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
