Description
Planted twenty years ago with a combination of clones on 100% schist soil, the High Garden vineyard is an equilibrium of extremes. Unforgiving rocky soils, high altitude and steep slopes, these are conditions not for the faint of heart but ideal for those seeking the holy grail of Central Otago Pinot Noir. The additional sunlight hours due to the steep slope works beautifully against the cool nature of the altitude and region resulting in utter harmony in the glass. Yields from the site are comparable to DRC’s Grand Cru Romanee-Conti Vineyard and the style of winemaking is focused on letting the site shine with no enzymatic additions, fining or filtration.
The High Garden Pinot Noir vineyard is owned and the fruit grown by Robin Tedder. Robin has been growing grapes and making wine since 1993. He became a Master of Wine in 1997. The Viticulturist is Gary Crabbe, a highly experienced Viticulturist and a graduate of Lincoln. The Winemaker is Jennifer Parr, NZ Winemaker of the Year 2020.
Robin says that the 2022 vintage is the finest that has been seen at the High Garden Vineyard. It was a vintage that brought with it ample light, heat and coupled with the typical cool temperatures of Gibbston this is a year that has allowed for this site to truly express it’s full potential. “The 2022 vintage demonstrates the potential of this distinguished vineyard site given the power and depth present in the wine, full of energy that goes on and on.” Robin Tedder MW
20% whole cluster. Extended maceration with 26 days on skins. 10 months in small French Oak, 30% new. A near-perfect growing season meant the vines were able to source enough water naturally, no frost pressure and ample sun and heat to ripen the fruit without compromising acidity. With lower than average bunch weight the resulting wine is powerful with density and levity aplenty.
20% of the fruit was fermented as whole cluster, 26 days on skins and then aged in 30% new French oak.
Intense aromas of spice, red primary fruits and dried herbs. This characteristic is unique in the Pinot world identifying Gibbston immediately with its beguiling aromas. With a deep purple scarlet colour the wine is rich and full bodied with layers of fine grape tannins in support. The natural fine acids are present in the background, giving the wine balance and structure.
98 Points – Andrew Caillard MW “Medium deep crimson. Classical dark cherry, strawberry, hint negroni aromas with underlying vanilla/marzipan notes. Beautifully focused pinot noir with fresh strawberry, dark cherry, marzipan flavours, fine slinky bittersweet textures, lovely mid-palate viscosity and fresh long indelible acidity. Lovely feathery plume at the finish. Very good tension, vinosity and freshness. A brilliant follow up vintage, to the 20 and 21, highlighting an exceptional year. Brilliant!”
96 points, Bob Campbell MW “Fragrant pinot noir with delicate floral, black cherry, nutty oak and subtle mixed spice flavours. Supple, elegant wine that defines the term ‘subtle power’. It has an ethereal texture and impressively lengthy finish and shows great complexity with a peacock’s tail-like display thatreveals many flavours. Deliciously approachable now but shows good ageing potential.”
