James Kellie (formerly of Howard Park) has had extraordinary success in a relatively short time, winning trophies galore and for 10 consecutive years awarded the elusive 5 Red Star rating (the highest recognition possible from James Halliday, Australia’s most influential wine critic awarded to top 5% of wineries for “a consistent record of excellence”).
Harewood Estate vineyard is located in the spectacularly beautiful coastal town of Denmark in Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region, 5 hours south east of Perth. The Great Southern wine growing region of WA provides unmatched versatility and quality for a winemaker. From the elegance and delicacy of cool climate Riesling to the restrained intensity of Denmark Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The texture and richness of Mount Barker Cabernet and the structure, weight and complexity of Frankland River Shiraz. Harewood Estate showcases this potential in a range of wines produced from grapes grown in select, low yielding vineyards.
This wine is a blend of several blocks of Pinot (clones D5V12, 114, 115 and 777) growing in our two vineyards in the cool-climate, maritime region of Denmark, Western Australia. The Harewood vineyard, planted in 1988 is the slightly warmer site of the two and is complemented by the higher altitude Apricus Hill vineyard, planted in 1995, with sweeping views over William Bay and the imposing Southern Ocean.
The wine shows a light crimson with hints of purple. A lifted nose of red cherry and strawberry is complemented by earthier, mushroom characters and spicy French oak. Vibrant flavours of raspberry and ripe strawberries are balanced by more complex notes of spice and truffle with a creamy mid palate. The wine finishes with hints of mocha and redcurrant acidity supported by gentle tannins and toasty French oak.
James has really lifted the bar with this 2020 release… very smart entry level Pinot
93 points, Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot “Bargain Pinot Noir is very hard to find so pinot fans should track this wine down to enjoy over the next couple of years. It is a bright mid cherry in colour as well as fine, elegant and understated. There is beautifully pure pinot noir fruits – sweet red cherry, mushroom and subtly spicy aromas. The palate is then pure silk; dry, mid-weight and supple with its juicy fruits also carrying an attractive savoury, almost meaty edge with a long finish that lifts it to potentially the best release under this label. It is a user-friendly pinot style with surprising depth and complexity for its price. Drink now with duck pancakes.”
90 points, Halliday’s 2022 Australian Wine Companion “Bright, crunchy and like a first cherry of the season. Pretty. Decent delivery of ‘pinosity’ for $20.” Erin Larkin.
