Description

Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced predominantly from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!

Cropped from a specific half-acre of the Merricks Grove vineyard, Terre de Feu (the land of fire) takes its name from the vein of pure red ferrosol soils of this plot. Many years ago, Barney noticed that the vines in this ironstone buttonhole were producing slightly smaller bunches, yielding wines of greater depth and concentration than the surrounding vineyard. Thus, in 2013 the decision was taken to create this micro-cuvée. The power of the fruit enables a 100% whole-bunch ferment, and Terre de Feu remains Garagiste’s only Pinot to be made this way. The 2022 spent 21 days on skins, followed by 10 months in 30% new oak hogsheads.

New 2022 vintage is here and and from an exceptional vintage. This is the most powerful and structured Pinot that Garagiste produces. It’s such an inviting wine—bright with delicious bunchy fragrance, pure Pinot fruit and supporting tones of warm earth and spice. The whole-bunch is seamlessly integrated, working in tandem with generous and fleshy fruit weight, polished tannins and star-bright acidity. It’s seductive, supple and mouth-wateringly moreish with a spice flecked, lengthy close. Hat’s off; it’s a brilliant wine.

Review for 2019 .. 96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine CompanionThere’s attention to detail with all the Garagiste wines, none more so than Terre de Feu: 100% whole bunches, 23 days on skins, wild yeast, lightly foot trod, matured in French hogsheads, 25% new, for 10 months. Beautifully harnessed flavours of cherry and pips, Middle Eastern spices, wood smoke, twigs and a grind of pepper. Furry tannins shapely across the fuller-bodied palate and mouth-watering acidity to close. Stamped with savouriness and serious intent.”
