Description
Produced by François Labet, one of Burgundy’s pioneers of organic viticulture and the largest vineyard holder in Clos de Vougeot grand cru with Château de la Tour. This vibrant, versatile “Mediterranean Burgundy” oozes personality and value.
Labet has a holiday house in the rugged dramatic island of Corsica and has some good friends who are growers there. One of these friends has a rocky, high-altitude vineyard planted to Pinot Noir and so they decided to see what they could do together. The vineyard is located on the east coast of Corsica’s Haute-Corse department at 400-metres altitude, above the town of Ghisonaccia.
Rather unlike the treatment for his red Burgundies, François Labet fully de-stems the fruit for this wine and then ages it two-thirds in tank and one-third in French oak before bottling. This is already open for business, with spice/blue fruits, earthy forest floor notes and even some secondary tones starting to shine through. On top of the sweet core of fruit there’s some Mediterranean garrigue, a hint of anise and a kiss of French oak spice. The bright, clean finish reflects the wine’s rocky, high-country terroir with juicy tannins and a snap of tangy acidity.
Review for 2019 …“The 2019 Ile de Beauté has a slightly higher-toned bouquet compared to the 2018, offering raspberry coulis and black cherry aromas; violets emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, rounded tannins and a little tarry toward the finish. A hint of tobacco lingers on the aftertaste.” 88 Points, Neal Martin, Vinous
